Old DS can get bright like DS Lite, some say

Old DS can get bright like DS Lite, some say A poster on Spanish-language message board elotrolado.net has apparently hacked his original Nintendo DS to have four levels of brightness. He did this when he attempted to install a hacked firmware from this site. The install was successful, and the DS was then recognized as a DS Lite and thus had 4 different brightness levels. Apparently, however, this only works for certain DS units. GBADEV.org forum members certainly have their suspicions, but there is a video of the process in action. Kotaku then raises an excellent question... are we paying $150 for little more then a cosmetic upgrade to our DSes?

Comments

Grimblade: I for one think this is a hoax... plenty of ways to fake this. Take DS lite innards, put them inside old DS shell... voila, old DS with 4 brightness levels, as someone on gbadev points out.
Dooz: I wouldn't be suprised if it was true, though. Since when isn't Nintendo trying to make us pay lots of money for the same shit over and over?
Darian Loneheart: Tee-hee... It's funny cuz it's true. ^_^
pangit: dooz...nintendo doesnt MAKE you buy stuff over and over again, its your choice.
Dooz: NO WAY! WOW! WHO WOULD HAVE THOUGHT?
demi: I want to lick Grimblade's nipples.
Bun_Again: I should think anyone who buys the DS Lite goes in full well knowing they're just getting a cosmetic upgrade...
pangit: more than a cosmetic upgrade? do you not know about the longer battery life, different and improved backlight settings, improved stylus, improved digital pad and buttons, better positioning of microphone. i mean come on, the whole feel and experience and look is different.
Darian Loneheart: As it was with the GBA. I'm just glad I waited on getting a DS. It's something I've learned to always do with Nintendo handhelds. :p
Grimblade: pangit, I am quite aware of the other changes made to the DS lite. The improved backlight settings is just one of the most obvious (and in my opinion, most desired) feature of the redesign.
Dooz: The whole playing experience changes with the new DS? Hardly.
Sullichin: Too bad the games still suck. *ZING*
pangit: well i already have a ds myself, and for me i think its worth getting a ds lite by reasons of my previously stated comments. i just hope that it can garner people into picking one up who've thought the old design wasnt ascthetically pleasing to them.
pangit: playing experience may not change as drastic as i may have made it sound, but i think there will still be enough contrast to notice.
